Hair follicles

There are many unanswered questions about the exact physiology and bio-chemical operation of mammalian hair follicles. The lack of understanding makes the task of devising effective treatments for hair disorders more difficult.

The hair follicle has been an object of intense research for more than 70 years and a quick search on PubMed now retrieves almost 8000 articles. With such a vast collection of published results, one might think that most of the hair follicle’s mysteries would have been revealed and that clues or even satisfactory solutions would have been found to solve common problems such as telogen effuvium, hair thinning, or whitening, but also devastating forms of alopecia, such as androgenetic alopecia, frontal fibrosing alopecia, alopecia areata, totalis or universalis. Alas, today, the few pharmaceutical and cosmetic products on the market today only offer a partial and unpredictable answer to these conditions." [ our hyperlink ]

A variety of genetic (and possibly environmental) factors probably play a role in causing Male Pattern Hair Loss in humans. Many are documented, but there is no overall scientific agreement (although the link with androgen hormone levels is well established).
