Non-hypoglycemia
Non-hypoglycemia - a.k.a. Idiopathic postprandial syndrome -
- describes a collection of clinical signs and symptoms similar to medical hypoglycemia but without the demonstrably low blood glucose levels which characterize said condition."
Source : Wikipedia
The symptoms, which include :
- Shakiness
- A sense of weakness
- Altered or depressed mood
- Confusion
- Fatigue
- Anxiety
- Paleness
- Perspiration
- Increased pulse or respiratory rate
- Hunger
- typically appear a few hours after eating.
Unlike 'true' hypoglycemia (lack of blood glucose) the syndrome does not lead to damage to the nervous system.
The syndrome is widespread - actual numbers are unknown, but some have described it as 'an epidemic'.
The causes are not currently known.
The are suggestions that the syndrome may not in fact be a 'real' disease. In October 1974, The New England Journal of Medicine featured an article entitled Non-hypoglycemia as an epidemic condition describing the condition as a "non-disease".
