Unlike 'true' hypoglycemia (lack of blood glucose) the syndrome does not lead to damage to the nervous system. The syndrome is widespread - actual numbers are unknown, but some have described it as 'an epidemic'. The causes are not currently known. The are suggestions that the syndrome may not in fact be a 'real' disease. In October 1974, //The New England Journal of Medicine// featured an article entitled [[https://www.nejm.org/doi/pdf/10.1056/NEJM197410242911713|Non-hypoglycemia as an epidemic condition]] describing the condition as a "non-disease".
