====== 'Silkhenge' spider nests ====== 'Silkhenge' spider nesting structures were discovered in Peru by research scientist Troy Alexander in 2013 . Alexander posted [[https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthisbug/comments/1l6uaj/seriously_who_makes_egg_cases_like_this_just/|a photo of the structure]], which later studies at the University of Florida confirmed to be the nest of some kind of arthropod - presumed to be a species of spider. The nests have a central pillar which are topped with a pod containing a few eggs. The pillar is surrounded by an intricately woven 'ring fence'. (see photo linked above) The species which builds the nest remains unknown - as do the reasons for its intricate and unique design. Some researchers have suggested that the 'fence' is to trap organisms which will later serve as food for the hatching spiderlings. See :[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silkhenge|Wikipedia]]
